Why Ed Walline Is the Beach Access We Recommend to Everyone

After 20 years visiting 30A in a wheelchair, we've tried every beach access point multiple times. If someone asks us "which beach should I go to?" the answer is always the same: **Ed Walline Regional Beach Access**.

What Makes It Special

Ed Walline is the **only** beach access on 30A — and one of very few on the entire Gulf Coast — that has a **Mobi Mat**. This is a blue roll-out mat that extends across the sand, allowing standard wheelchairs to roll from the end of the boardwalk ramp much closer to the shoreline.

At every other access point, the ramp ends and you hit soft sand. Without a beach wheelchair, that's where your beach day ends. At Ed Walline, the Mobi Mat bridges that gap.

The Full Package

Beyond the Mobi Mat, Ed Walline delivers everything:

Free beach wheelchair at Lifeguard Tower 9 — first-come, first-served during season (March–October, 10:30 AM–5:30 PM).

ADA-compliant ramp from the parking area down to the sand.

Accessible restrooms with outdoor showers.

Location, location, location — right near Gulf Place, which means restaurants (Shunk Gulley, Growler Garage, La Cocina), shops, and the 30A bike trail are steps away.

Shaded picnic pavilion overlooking the Gulf — perfect for when you need a break from the sun.

Our Routine

Here's our typical Ed Walline day:

We arrive by 10:30 when the lifeguards open. Grab a beach wheelchair. Roll down the ramp and onto the Mobi Mat. Set up near the water with our umbrella. Stephanie spends the morning in the beach wheelchair or transferred to a beach blanket on the Mobi Mat.

Lunch at Shunk Gulley — it's literally a 2-minute roll from the beach. Their oysters are incredible and the restaurant is fully accessible (level entry, good spacing, accessible restroom).

Afternoon back on the beach if we're feeling it, or a cold beer at Growler Garage next door.

One Heads Up

Ed Walline is popular. It's arguably the most accessible beach on the entire Emerald Coast, which means word has gotten around. On peak summer days, arrive early. The beach wheelchair might be spoken for by noon, and parking fills up. Weekday mornings are ideal.
