Pool Accessibility: The Feature Most Renters Get Wrong
A pool can make or break a beach vacation. For wheelchair users, pool access is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — features in a vacation rental.
The Four Types of Pool Access
Zero-Entry (Beach Entry) — The gold standard. The pool gradually slopes from zero depth, like walking into the ocean. You can roll a beach wheelchair right into the water. Rare in private homes but found at some resorts.
Ramp Access — A built-in or removable ramp into the pool. This is what we have at Slim Shady Beach House. It allows wheelchair users to enter the water independently or with minimal assistance. The ramp grade matters — steeper than 1:12 can be dangerous.
Pool Lift — A mechanical chair that lowers you into the water. Common at hotels and resorts, rare in private homes. Works well but requires some upper body strength or an assistant. Not everyone is comfortable with the transfer.
Steps Only — The most common and the least accessible. Some wheelchair users can manage with assistance, but this effectively means the pool is not independently accessible.
What to Ask Before Booking
Don't just ask "is the pool accessible?" Ask specifically:
What type of pool entry is available? If there's a ramp, what's the grade? How deep is the pool at the entry point? Is the pool deck level and wheelchair-navigable? Is there shade near the pool? Is the gate/fence accessible?
Our Setup at Slim Shady
Our heated plunge pool has ramp access behind the pool leading to a boardwalk to the driveway. The pool itself is 4 feet deep — deep enough to enjoy but shallow enough to feel safe. The pool deck is level concrete with no lips or transitions.
It took significant planning and expense to build it right. That's exactly why we include pool accessibility details in every property listing on this site.
Resort Options
If a private pool isn't in the budget, several 30A resorts have accessible pools. WaterColor Inn, High Pointe Resort, and Sandestin all offer pool lifts or accessible entry options. Call the resort directly to confirm current accessibility.
