Seaside: 30A's Most Iconic Town, Reviewed for Accessibility
Seaside is the town that put 30A on the map. The filming location for The Truman Show. The pastel cottages, the amphitheater, the Airstream food trucks, the town square bustling with families.
But how does it work for wheelchair users? Here's our honest assessment.
The Good
The town square is accessible. Flat, paved, and easy to navigate. This is where the restaurants, shops, and amphitheater are concentrated. Great Southern Café, Pizza by the Sea, and most square-facing businesses have level entry.
Van Ness Butler Jr Beach Access is nearby, between Seaside and WaterColor. ADA ramp, free beach wheelchair, and that stunning zigzag ramp with sunset views.
The Timpoochee Trail runs right through Seaside, connecting it to WaterColor and Seagrove Beach.
The amphitheater has wheelchair-accessible seating for the free concerts and movies that happen throughout the season.
The Challenges
The streets are narrow and some are unpaved. The charming brick paths and sandy lanes that give Seaside its character also create navigation challenges. Stick to the paved paths.
Parking is limited and the lots can be a distance from the square. On busy days, you may need to park in the outer lots and roll a bit.
Some shops have steps. The boutiques along the main streets are a mixed bag — some have level entry, others have a step or two. The newer shops tend to be better.
Cottage rentals are mostly NOT accessible. The original Seaside cottages are charming but were built before accessibility was a consideration. Narrow doorways, steps, small bathrooms. A few have been renovated but most are challenging.
Our Recommendation
Seaside is absolutely worth visiting as a wheelchair user. The town square experience is accessible and delightful. But we wouldn't recommend renting a cottage IN Seaside unless you've verified specific accessibility features. Instead, stay in a verified accessible rental nearby (like our place in Seagrove Beach, a 5-minute drive) and visit Seaside for dining, shopping, and the beach.
